The Scoop

As you probably know by now, doctors who only treat kids are called pediatricians. They’re the ones who best understand that children have different kinds of medical needs than adults. Kids catch diseases that adults don’t get (think chicken pox), they’re very active and get more sprained ankles and broken bones, and they’re more scared of things like shots and needles. (Although who really likes getting shots ever?) So pediatricians not only have to know how to heal a kid who’s sick, they have to be good at making that kid feel safe. As with any doctor, you need an advanced degree and a special license to practice medicine from the state. This is a great, high-paying career if you love kids and dream of being a doctor. Plus you can even wear clown shoes if the mood strikes.

The Impact

Pediatricians, who know what kinds of diseases kids can eventually get as an adult, can advise parents on what they can do now for their kids (through diet, exercise, and personal hygiene) that will help them form healthy habits to last a lifetime.

The Fact

One of the oldest kid-centric hospitals in the world is The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which was founded way back in 1855.
