The Scoop

What kind of a farm has no animals, plants or barns? A wind farm! (Fewer straw hats, too.) You may have seen some of these new farms while driving through wide, flat fields or over mountains, where giant fans planted in the ground stand and "collect" the wind, generating power as they spin. Since they work with machines, not living things, the people who work on these farms aren't called farmers: They're wind energy engineers. These engineers determine the sites that are best for wind farms, design specific parts of wind machines (called turbines), and determine the best ways to turn wind motion into energy. They also get to feel good when they go to sleep every night because they're spending each day being highly eco-friendly.

The Impact

Wind energy is both "green" (non-polluting) and renewable, meaning that unlike oil energy, we'll never run out of wind!

The Fact

Wind mills have been in use since 2000 B.C. They were first developed in China and Persia.
